Things to consider while you read:

*Have you ever heard the phrase, "Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me"? How is that phrase proved/disproved by this personal narrative?
* How is this personal narrative similar/different from "101 MPH"?
* What are the purpose and audience of this story?

*Have you ever heard the phrase, "Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me"? How is that phrase proved/disproved by this personal narrative?
No. That phrase disproved this personal narrative because the essay mentioned that the author and her brother are suffering everyday by the foul mouth of the bully James. Both the author and her brother endure in the bus suffering from the bully james's taunt and tease by words.

    * How is this personal narrative similar/different from "101 MPH"?

This personal narrative is different from ''101MPH''. First, ''101 MPH'' is describing the object, which is car while this narration describes people, who is james. Also, ''101MPH'' describe the details of the object while this narration describe the process of being tortured by bully.

    * What are the purpose and audience of this story?
I think the purpose is to tell others that words can hurt others. The audience would be anyone who had an experience of being teased or taunted by words.

*Have you ever heard the phrase, "Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me"? How is that phrase proved/disproved by this personal narrative?

No. This phrase is strongly disproved by this personal narrative. This is because the author and her brother are bullied by James everyday but the most hurtful thing that the author experiences is when James calls her a swear word. Thats when she is truly wounded emotionally by the bully.

    * How is this personal narrative similar/different from "101 MPH"?

This personal narrative is similar in the way that both stories are describing something throughout the whole story. The difference is that in this narrative the author describes a person, James the bully, and in "101 MPH" the author describes an object, the car. Its also different because in this narrative the ending is not very happy. This is because James continues his taunting acts. But in "101 MPH" the author finds a better owner for his car and the story ends pretty happy.

    * What are the purpose and audience of this story?

The purpose of this story is to tell the world that bullying is a big problem in schools. Bullying can cause wounds that can take a while to heal. Another purpose is to tell everyone that words are sometimes more hurtful than actions. This is because words do have the power to hurt someone very deeply. The audience for this story can be anyone who has ever experienced something similar but it is mainly directed to the parents and the adults so they can be aware of whats happening in schools today.

    1. You assess the two styles of the author really well. Rick Bragg makes his point through an exterior description (the car) whereas Nicole Ball takes us through a internal monologue. Good work.

*Have you ever heard the phrase, "Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me"? How is that phrase proved/disproved by this personal narrative?
    A. Yes, I have heard of this phrase. Basically, the story “Stick and Stones” contradicted the whole meaning behind that phrase. The author shared a personal experience where she and her brother were verbally abused by a school bully, but instead of ignoring his actions, she turned her silence and ignorance to actions. The phrase did not live up to its true meaning in this personal narrative because the meaning of this phrase is regardless of any words, they cannot hurt a person, and this is a false statement in the narrative.

    * How is this personal narrative similar/different from "101 MPH"?
    A. Both, of the stories involve a personal experience from the author, which is one similar aspect. In the personal narrative, “101 MPH” the author emphasizes the importance of an object, whereas in “Stick and Stones” the highlight of the story is an everyday encounter with the school bully, James. Although the stories are about different personal experiences, readers can find ways to relate to the message and to the writer.

    * What are the purpose and audience of this story?
    A. The purpose of the story, in my perspective is sometimes we cannot live up to our words and our actions take over. Another phrase that might relate to this story is “Easier said than done” I feel that this quote is an example of the outcome of “Stick and Stones”. This story could be for any audience, but probably someone who has attended high school and below in general. I find that people who have been through high school or have experienced school bullying can easily relate to this story in general. Even though some may have never experienced bullying themselves, it is likely that someone has seen the acts of bullying.

    1. I think you succinctly point out a secondary moral to the story when you say "Easier said than done." Good work.

*Have you ever heard the phrase, "Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me"? How is that phrase proved/disproved by this personal narrative?
Yes, i have heard this before. In this narrative the author is telling a story about how she and her brother used to get bullied every morning on the bus drive home. the bully would always insult them verbally, but it got to the point where he started to do it physically as well. When he was doing it verbally, the brothers eded up ignoring him, but when it came to being physically they couldn't stand it anymore and all the insults that they had taken ended up coming out with a punch.

    * How is this personal narrative similar/different from "101 MPH"?
This personal narrative is similar to "101 MPH" because in both stories the authors use their personal life experiences to get a point across to the reader. It is different because unlike "101 MPH" this story does not use as much detail.

    * What are the purpose and audience of this story?
In my opinion, the purpose of this story is to let the reader know that sometimes there is bullying going around them and they don't notice it, and that maybe it would be a good idea to back up the "victims" rather than to cheer on the bully. The audience of this story is more likely to be junior high kids and high school kids, because it is during this period of school that bullying mostly happens.

*Have you ever heard the phrase, "Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me"? How is that phrase proved/disproved by this personal narrative?

No I have never heard that phrase. This phrase is disproved in this personal narrative. The author mentions of how she and her brother suffered from teasing, and also with the bad words that were said to her, those words made her brother act to defend. The words actually hurt them and cause them harm.

    * How is this personal narrative similar/different from "101 MPH"?

This narrative is somewhat similar to “101 MPH”, where both speakers retell a personal event that was important to them and it affected them at a certain point in their lives. The difference however is that in “101 MPH”, the author talks about his car, something material that made a change in his life, where he, in exchange destroyed it. In “Sticks and Stones”, the speaker talks about how a living person, her brother and herself, stood up against the bully.

    * What are the purpose and audience of this story?
The purpose of this story is to show how words can be more harmful than any physical harm. Even though people seem to fight against it and ignore the words, it still hurts them deep to have those words directed to them. The audience for this story would be people have gone through the experience of having been hurt by words or have been bullied and convince themselves to ignore it and say that it doesn’t hurt them.

  6. Yes, i have heard the phrase. to me the the phrase seems to uphold the idea that this phrase is indeed false, i dontthink that it is only proven in the world that we live in but also in the story "sticks and stones". the scenarios with the bullie proved to support that. This story and narrative is also very similar to that of the narrative of "101 MPH" because it reaches out to an audience who might be able to relate to this or even able to know of a similar situation. it helps the audience connect with the story, and in a way live through the authors story.

  7. *Have you ever heard the phrase, "Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me"? How is that phrase proved/disproved by this personal narrative?
Yes i have heard the phrase "Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me." This phrase is disproved in this personal narrative. The constant hurtful things that James was saying to Greg and Nicole made Nicole very angry and caused her to yell at James when he was hitting Greg with a stick. Words do have an effect on people and sometimes hurt more than if you actually use physical contact.

    * How is this personal narrative similar/different from "101 MPH"?
This personal narrative is similar to "101 MPH" because both narrators are retelling a personal story that stood out to them. This narrative differs from "101 MPH" in the way that their isn't that country feel or references. It is also different in the way that "Sticks and Stones" is talking about a problem that a lot of people go through and "101 MPH" is about a young man's car.

    * What are the purpose and audience of this story?
The purpose of the story is that words do have an effect on people and are sometimes more hurtful than being physically hurt. The audience is to anyone who has seen, experienced, or known someone who has been bullied.

  8. *Have you ever heard the phrase, "Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me"? How is that phrase proved/disproved by this personal narrative?
I have heard this phrase before but and I really feel this narrative proved that it's not always right. Words can be powerful and hurtful without laying a finger on a person. Provoking people with hurtful words will lead to violence, as said in the story.

    * How is this personal narrative similar/different from "101 MPH"?
Both narrators use descriptive detail to make the story stand out. Sticks and stones is different because there is hurting others through what people say instead of having a personal connection with a car.

    * What are the purpose and audience of this story?
The purpose of this story is to prove the saying "Stick and stones" is not necessarily true. People get hurt mentally besides getting hurt physically. The audience of the story is for people to relate to anyone who has been in a situation where they have been hurt by words.

  9. *Have you ever heard the phrase, "Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me"? How is that phrase proved/disproved by this personal narrative?

I feel that the saying was well displayed in this short story because it is the truth. It shows that when words get out of hand physical actions must be taken. when someone says a word you cant just blow it off but it lingers even more so than a fist would.

    * How is this personal narrative similar/different from "101 MPH"?

I feel it is similar in a way how both stories use vivid detail to bring you into the story but i think the meanings of the story are different. In "101 MPH" it is more of a male female relationship were as "sticks and Stones" is more of a brother sister relationship how family comes before all.

    * What are the purpose and audience of this story?
I feel that the purpose of this story was to show the human condition how we say that "...words will never hurt me..." but in actuality words have a deeper impact then that of a kick or punch. the audience of this story is for those who have been in this situation and know that the only way to stop it is to be physical because words can go to far sometimes.

  10. 1. I have not heard the phrase in a different narrative but I have heard it. I think it disproved it because she thought about getting her throat cut. So it shows how words did not hurt her physically but mentally. Also she decides to stand up to the bully.

    2. In 101 MPH it more descriptive and puts the image in your head but does not reveal everything to you. In this story it just describes it but this one paints the picture for you.

    3. The purpose of this story is to show that sticks and stones hurt, but also words. The story is for an audience that use words too loosely and don't think how it affects others.

  11. I have heard of the saying,"Sticks and stones may brake my bones but words will never hurt me" and I can honestly say it may be true in some cases. Sometimes words back fire and our instinct is to say something back. The story is similar to 101 MPH by the fact that its descriptions make you feel as if we were really there. The difference in the stories is that 101 MPH is about a teens car accident and "Sticks and stones" is about bullying. The purpose of this story is to inform us how bullying can hurt kids at any age and insist on telling someone that will listen to your plea for help. The audience is any age group.

  12. *Have you ever heard the phrase, "Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me"? How is that phrase proved/disproved by this personal narrative?
Yes. This phrase is disproved in the personal narrative because yes the narrator did take the verbal insults from the bully and cared nothing of it at first, but when the verbal insults became worse with swearing, that is when the narrator took action. So given what the phrase says, the narrator let words hurt her and affect her .

    * How is this personal narrative similar/different from "101 MPH"?
This narrative is similar to 101 MPH is a way where the narrator tells a personal story with vivid details and a story that most people can relate to, not necessarily being the bully or bullied, but remembering an event similar to it.

    * What are the purpose and audience of this story?
The purpose of the audience in this story is to inform about the writers personal event and how words can be a bully’s most dangerous weapon to anyone at any age. Words have the abilities to either bring people up or put them down so we \be extremely careful on what we say.

Yes, i have heard the phrase, "sticks and stones may break my bones... hurt me", especially heard it a lot in elementary school. That phrase was disproved in the story because the character seemed to be more emotionally disturbed with all the words said. This narrative is different from "101 MPH" because it does not talk about cars, instead it talks about bullying towards younger children. On the other hand both stories could relate in the sense that both the characters in the stories seemed to be emotionally disturbed by something. in "101 MPH" Bragg was emotionally disturbed with his car after his accident, in "sticks and stones" the character was disturbed with the words of another kid like him. The audience are mostly for teens and children who have or might have seen bullying at their school. The purpose of this story is to show how words can in some cases be more damaging than physical pain.

  14. *Have you ever heard the phrase, "Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me"? How is that phrase proved/disproved by this personal narrative?
    - Yes, I have heard the phrase before! My mother used to always say it to me as I was growing up. This phrase definately disproves this personal narrative because it states that, "words will never hurt me" and Nicole was really hurt by the swear word James (the bully) had called her. Having said that, the author contradicted her entire narrative.

    * How is this personal narrative similar/different from "101 MPH"?
    - This personal narrative is similar to "101 MPH" because they both write about their personal experiences in a descriptive manner. In "101 MPH" the car corresponds to James (the bully) in this narrative because they are both the main harships being discussed.
    * What are the purpose and audience of this story?
    - The purpose of this story is to inform the society that bullying is a serious problem in schools now. The audience of this story may be anyone who has encountered a bullying situation either at home or when they were at school. Even though some have neever experienced bullying maybe they were the bully! This story can also be for them and show that hurtful words can lead to angry situations. It's best to keep your comments to yourself if you wouldn't like it said to you.

  15. "Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me"? How is that phrase proved/disproved by this personal narrative?

This phrase is disproved by the personal narrative. This narrative allowed readers an insight into a bullied victim's thoughts. Although she doesn't act upon her feelings at first, Natalie's bottled up anger explodes when James becomes physical. However, it doesn't really affect her until James swears at her. This goes to show that that one single swear word had a lasting effect upon the her.

How is this personal narrative similar/different from "101 MPH"?

101 MPH goes into detail about a car while Stick and Stones goes in details about a kid bully. They both reveal the narrators feelings about the main subject of the story. In 101 MPH it was his love for his car. In Stick and Stones, it was her raging emotions in reaction to James bullying.

What are the purpose and audience of this story?

Bruises and cuts can and will eventually heal, but words can never be taken back. The purpose of this narrative is to help readers relate to a bully victim. It helps readers understand the situation from a bully victim's point of view. It encourages the audience to stand up for bully victims and to not be a passive bystander. In the story, Natalie and her brother didn't get a happy ending because James continued his bullying anticts. However, if students stood up for them or confronted James about it, the ending could have turned out completely different. Whether it would have change things for the better or would've made things worse, no one would ever know...

*Have you ever heard the phrase, "Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me"? How is that phrase proved/disproved by this personal narrative?
No. The authors experince proves this phrase to be false, because the insults seemed to be more striking to them in causing intimidation and even a sence of despair to long for their release out of the bus. We can also see how they're affected by curses, not being exposed to it in other means than that of their bullie. Also the narrator confesed she visualized, beating the bullie because of her frustration to be tortured, which in my opining is calculating how serious this issue and how its affecting her to go around what her parents say. That which makes you feel threatend or insecure cannot always be dissmissed as irrevelant and wait quietly consuming all fear and anger. It was never mentioned that they were physically beat, but it was a sum of insults, and tease with a simple tap to the head that sparked what was hidden, when she asked him to leave her brother alone.
    * What are the purpose and audience of this story? The purpose of this story is to prove the phrase to be wrong, words are indeed powerfull and may affect a persons state of mind far more than the physical because not only is the person being "beat" externally but also "internally", that with words. The narrataion targets everyone who can identify themselves with a similar situation.

*Have you ever heard the phrase, "Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me"? How is that phrase proved/disproved by this personal narrative?
I have hear this phrase many times when i grew up, I never really understand the actually meaning of the phrase because words did hurt as well as sticks and stones. In the beginning of the narrative the phrase was disproved because insults hurt emotionally. The narrative described how Nicole and her brother Greg were constantly being bullied by a kid named James who wasn't physically intimidating but insulting with his foul mouth.

    * How is this personal narrative similar/different from "101 MPH"?
In a way these two stories are both similar in their detail and descriptiveness on the subject. Such as, 101 MPH was detailed about the car and how he cared for it .In Stick and Stones the author was in detailed on how Nicole and her brother Greg were getting bullied by James.

    * What are the purpose and audience of this story?
The purpose of the story was that words are very emotionally painful and can really affect a one's life rather than a physical wound that can be healed. The Audience for this narrative is for those who have been harassed with insults. Also this can be towards those who are bullying others that words are much more hurtful.

  18. 1. I have never heard anyone you that phrase in my entire life but in the story it shows that it is not true. It is all true because we all know that words do hurt sometimes more than punches and that's why Greg reacted in a physical way to James comment. The fact that he insulted his sister was more than enough for him to get offended and just punch James.

    2. I think that Sticks and Stones is more informative than describing like how 101 MPH was. I felt like the author was just telling you the story not really catching my attention to envision all the situations that occurred.

3.The purpose of this story is just to inform the reader that words can sometimes hurt more than getting hit or something like that. It shows that we all have our limits when it comes to verbal abuse. The audience of this story will be for kids or even adults that are having difficulty dealing with someone harassing them and to let them know that bulling is not acceptable.

  19. *Have you ever heard the phrase, "Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me"? How is that phrase proved/disproved by this personal narrative?
No. By this narrative it is not proved. She was trying to ignore James, but he wounded when James called her a swear word.
    * How is this personal narrative similar/different from "101 MPH"?
Both authors tried to discribe the personal experience. Also, they describe the stories details by showing them not telling. They let readers to imagine the feelings.
The difference is describing the interaction between people, and the other story was about the young man feeling to his car.
    * What are the purpose and audience of this story?
The purpose of the story is to show how the effects could be harmful by the words. Author purpose is the words can hurt the people feelings more than the actions.
Unfortunately, some of students struggle with bullying in high schools.

-Since starting school, once piece of advice I do recall is the famous phrase. Usually in most cases it works, and you just remind yourself that they are just worthless words. But in this case, words can hurt a person tremendously, or someone can finally reach their peek and can't take it anymore. After a while, the phrases meaning wore off to where the two kids couldn't take it anymore.
-It is similar because it is a personal narrative, meaning the person who experienced or went through this situation is explaining it first person. But in 101 MPH, his narrative was more descriptive, making you feel as if you were there. But in Sticks & Stones, their narrative was more of a story to tell, not as descriptive but still enough to understand what is going on.
-The purpose of this story was to prove that words can be strung out and eventually harsh and hurtful when people talk bad or bully the outcasts. It leaves a much more negative impact on a kids life emotionally and mentally then physically. And the story is reaching out to any audience who has ever experienced such harsh bullying and everyone else to prove bullying with words is far more hurtful.

  21. Trevor Jaggar, I have heard the phrase and i feel it was greatly disproved by this personal narrative. I see this buy the author and her brother and how they are bullied buy James most days, but what seems to do the most damage is the words that James uses.
The personal narrative are alike in that the stores are both authors prove a point but in very different ways, one author uses and car in 101 mph, and then in Stick and stones the author uses a person aka James the bully .
The author is trying to say that bullying is a massive problem in schools, and in life in general.

*Have you ever heard the phrase, "Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me"? How is that phrase proved/disproved by this personal narrative?
    - Yes, I've heard this phrase before, and in this narrative it basically disproves it. As it went on, it gave many examples of how words can be a very hurtful and traumatizing thing for anyone to have to deal with, and it explains how words can be used for many things, you can uplift people, and you can also bring them down. In this story, it didn't matter if the bully aka James hit them or hurt them physically. What caused the most hurting was the words that came out of his mouth.

    * How is this personal narrative similar/different from "101 MPH"?
    - The narratives are similar in that they are passionate about what they have written, because they have lived it. It is different only because one deals with the love for a car, and the other deals with a problem with a person.

    * What are the purpose and audience of this story?
-The purpose is to show that words can be hurtful, and you should watch what you say. Also, if you are ever confronted with a situation like this that your words can be of use, so that you can speak up about the problem and change the results,in this case, bullying. Words have power and you can use them for good or for the bad.

I have heard the phrase and I remember growing up my mother teaching me to ignore words but if someone was to put a hand on me I could definitely fight back. The phrase is disproved in the story though because the kids are definitely affected by the words, and I think everyone has a breaking point and certain words to certain people will result in a response and it may not be good. I think this story is similar to 101 mph. Both stories are somewhat dramatic and even though they are dramatic about different things one being a car and the other being a bully, the emotion is still there. The purpose of this story is to stand up for yourself, even though they are just words sometimes you have to take a stand.
